Playa de Oro Pursues Sustainable Beach Certification

Playa de Oro in Puerto Vallarta is on track to become the first beach certified as sustainable under the current municipal administration. This effort underscores the city’s commitment to promoting sustainable tourism practices.

Councilman Christian Omar Bravo Carbajal, head of the Commission for Free, Clean, and Certified Beaches, has been leading the charge. Since the beginning of his term, 12 cleanup campaigns have been conducted on beaches, rivers, and streams, resulting in a 70% reduction in marine debris. Nearly 1,600 volunteers have participated in these initiatives, collecting over 100 tons of waste.

Ecology supervisor Jonathan Nacar Muñoz announced that the certification process is in its final stages. Next week, the Mexican Institute for Standardization and Certification will conduct an audit to evaluate water quality, environmental infrastructure, and waste management.

In preparation for the audit, a community cleanup event will be held on March 8th at 7:30 a.m. at Playa de Oro. Hoteliers, beach vendors, and public officials will participate in the event.
