Souvenirs........again

Thanks so much for the nfo on silver and alpeca! I am more interested in trinkets for kids, and glassware/pottery and sarapes. I am on a limited budget, so galleries are not an option, most likely, but I am interested in decorative, AUTHENTIC, items that are inexpensive. I need good souvenirs that my boys can take back to friends (they are 10 and 13) and things for me!! What types of things are common to purchase?

You can ususally find colorful baskets for under $5US a piece at the market by the Cuale river, there you can also find wooden tops in bright colors for around $3 US a piece that are a lot of fun for children. Those would be two simple options. My son loves the friendship bracelets and iguana necklaces that you can get on the street stalls by the river and those are also really inexpensive, there you can also get crocheted bags for little girls and your own girlfriends back home. All these options should run you less that $10US each.

Head to the Rio Cuale and go over to the island an check out the shops there and also on the north side of the river is a huge flea
market, where you will just about find everything under the sun. This last trip in Jan I bought 20 refrigerator magnets to give to the teachers that I sub for and nurses that I work with during the weekends. They are a piece of tile 2 in sq and hand painted, with very nice depictions of PV. Every one loved them. Price $3usd each.

Shells ok, not many to be found along the hotel part of the bay. Sand not allowed. For shells you might be able to buy a basket of them at the flea market for a few bucks and hand them out.

That is a very true statement about not shopping when the cruise ships are in port. Prices are always higher at that time, I got a beautiful decanter and 4 shot glasses with a wodden desplay for only $25.00. The price when the cruise ship was in town, $65.00!!
This was was in Cabo in 2003 so I am sure it is the same in PV.
