five of us are coming to puerto neuvo, staying at paradise village. would it be cheaper for us to rent a car for a week, or to get to puerto vallarta and other places, use taxis or the bus. also what is the cost of a taxi from the airport to puerto neuvo. we are really excited about this trip, but are on a budget. thanks linzi

Re:rent a car/dont rent a car /use bus/taxi
If you are on a budget, it is far less expensive to take the bus than to cab it or rent a car.
A bus into town (hotel zone) from Paradise Villa, NUEVO VALLARTA, is 10 pesos. A taxi is about 110 pesos (give or take, be sure to ask your hotel front desk for the correct zone amount to downtown (or wherever you are going) and ask the cab first the fare before heading off.) (Ask them where to catch the bus, they will direct you....the bus is silver, ATM is the company, and the windsheild says Nuevo Vallarta on it.

If you are not familar with driving in Vallarta, I do not suggest anyone renting a car as it can be challenging. While the rules of the road may be similar, the road rules, like defensive driving, one way streets, exiting and entering are very difficult if you do not know where you are going. Renting a car is not cheap, not a lot of parking downtown, and, if you get in an accident with any injuries, all drivers involved go to jail until sorted out....(and most insurance does not cover 100% of the total cost of an accident)

All taxis from the airport are Federal Zone taxis and are more expensive than the yellow city taxis. Paradise Village (or any other hotel) does not have airport transfers unless you buy that option through your travel agent which is usually at least $20 US per person, and you can normally get a taxi for less than that.

Make sure you go to the TAXI BOOTH at the airport, you can see the zone prices there. Tell them you have a party of five- and they will give you the price. Pay, take the ticket outside and the taxi drivers will load you up and take you to the hotel.
Coming back to the airport is cheaper as any taxi can go there, but only Federal Zone taxis can pick up arrivals at the airport.

Some people say crossing the bridge to take a yellow city taxi is cheaper, but not necessarily so as they have wisened up and now try to charge airport rates. Since you have five people, and luggage, you will never all fit in one yellow city taxi anyway, so save yourself the treck across the bridge and bite the bullet and just buy the ticket at the booth.

You can get along just fine with taking the bus. If you stay out past 10:30- 11:00 PM, take a taxi back (buses stop running about then) and split the cost. (Once again, know the price and ask before you take off)
