Last year I did some good bartering with my insulated Scouts Canada mug for some reason this guy in the store really wanted it! :D
What do the locals like that we can bring?

I do like the idea of bringing little items from home to go along with cash tips and just for gifts.
I heard ball caps and tees from home are appreciated.
I buy postcards so we can show where we live.
My daughter in laws Mom works in a department store. She collects designer perfume samples for me so I can give them as gifts. I like giving the maids along with their cash tip candles candle holders nice smellies and soaps so they can pamper themselves when they go home at the end of the day.
The items are small and easy to pack.:)

What to bring!
I take things for the children too. Then I ask the maid, bellman, vendors etc., if they have kids...son or daughter? I can get the hot wheel cars for $1 and I can usually find barbie dolls on sale for around $4. They really seem to like being able to take a special something home to their children. Puzzles, coloring books and crayons work well also. In our dollar stores here I can find coloring books in english and spanish so they can learn english words while they color.
You can also find the english/spanish pocket dictionaries at the dollar store, helps them communicate with us sometimes. I just look for small and lightweight and go from there.

Waiters liked the disposable bic lighters I bring with the Seattle Space Needle/Seattle written on them. I just buy a handful at the airport on the way down.

last year I had lots of people wanting to buy my canada hat. I finally sold it to the ticket agent for 50 pesos on the way home. I brought a lot of nice Canada keychains that I can buy for 1.50 up here. I handed them out to the maid, the entertainment staff and the pool staff. They seemed to really like them.
I will bring them again next time we go.

We brought pencils with Canadian emblems on them and the kids flocked to us for them....my kids handed them out freely and had crowds around them almost constantly.....
when you take gifts there do you have to let customs know your bringing gifts.
I never have. But other people will know for sure.
We were never questioned going through customs with gifts.
I had every available space in the suitcases stuffed with items and also 2 hockey bags full of gifts and not one question and best of all ... Green light.:)

When I went to PV I brought a new sewing kit ( just had 2 or 3 things of thread and a few needles). My mom got it somewhere and never used it. never even opened it. One day I left a tip along with that for the maid. I also left a few post cards of Canada and Calgary other times
my parents took a bunch of pens that have a button u press and they light up. They handed out to servers and our friend rogelio. My dad said the look on there faces said it all. Just think it was only a pen and it made there day
I think thats a great idea of doing up little gift bags I might have to borrow that idea :D
