Susan(a), you are right that a 500 peso note is vey big to a lot of the taxis and other medium/small businesses in Mexico when it comes to making change. On a few occasions, I have even had problems with 200 peso notes.
On another money topic, a local vendor rejected my 50 peso note during my last visit to PV because it had a small portion of its corner torn off. Apparently, it is difficult to use money that is slightly torn, has writing on it, or has small parts missing. I eventually managed to spend the note, but I learned a lesson to look at money received as change more closely.
If a vendor accidentally takes in a damaged note, he may try to pass it on to you (perhaps hidden under other notes). If you find a damaged note, you should request a different one.
