punta cana or puerto vallarta

Hi, I know this is a PV message board, but I was wondering if anyone has been to both Punta Cana and Puerto Vallarta? We were planning a winter vacation (1st time without kids) and not sure about where to go. We were thinking about the Riu Jalisco inPV and the Sunscape in Punta Cana. They are both about the same price for all inclusive (apples vacations) The only difference is the charter to PV is at an airport a few hours away. How is the weather in PV at the end of January? In the pictures the water looks nicer in Punta Cana, just not sure if theres much to do there. Thanks for any INFO. Bye
