By public market do you mean the Flea markets? If you do, no, they are open 7 days a week. Maybe a few hours short on Sundays.
ok, if we are talking about the same flea market. it is gone!!! there is a 4 story parking garage there... these vendors have been disbursed along the new board walk by the bay... (take a right at hooters, to the bay, and then back south towards old town. there is a nice new bridge over the river with out croppings to stop and look out into the bay area... there is a staircase to take you down to the shops and resturants along the river, or you keep going south to Burros, Epoca, Andales, etc. etc. etc... it is great now... you can walk to all these places when you are on the malecon instead of the taxis....

Ok, well i often wondered. I would ask a local before I went just to make sure the times and locations are still the same.

Vallarta has a few neighborhood flea markets \"Tianguis\" where you buy fresh vegetables and fruits for REALLY low prices and shop alongside the nationals! This is a definite must experience! The hours run approximately 8am to 3pm. Below is a list of the neighborhoods.
* Wednesday: Ixtapa
* Thursday: Near the Red Cross-Col. Lopez Mateos/Cruz Roja
* Friday: Ramblases
* Saturday: Regional Hospital - Calle Luis Donaldo Colocio and Ubrimento (till 10pm-ish)-the bus drops you off right in front. Small but LOTS of fruit/vegetable stands, some souvenir chachkees, new stuff (radios, toys, hair stuff), some used clothes and shoes.
* Sunday: El Remance
Shopping and looking around Pitillal is a lot of fun. I enjoy being in Pitillal when the shop owners start opeing the garage type doors.
Lots of veggie and fruit stands and naked chickens hanging in the shops.:)
I agree with susan p and smitty about the Large Flea Market.. went 2 times first trip and never went back again.. not a lot of fun being followed by sellers while trying to shop.
