I checked with my local cell phone company (Cellcom) and they told me I could not get that phone to work in PV. What is the most economical way to keep in touch with family and business back in the states?

It depends on who your cell company has roaming agreements with but I would not advise using your cell phone from the U.S there. T-Mobile told me that I could use my phone there but it would cost me $1.50 a minute. I would use either a phone card or I would get a prepaid Mexican cell phone that you can recharge the minutes on. If your staying for a long period of time, such as I will be doing in April, get a monthly plan (not sure if you need an FM3 for that).
On a side note, you could always buy an unlocked phone before you go and just switch your SIM cards out.

Telcel is the most convenient - 200p for a phone with 120p talk time.
