Will the cabs and bus system take American money?

The cabs will but not the buses. You are better off to change your money into pesos. In the airport to the left of customs is one of the best exchange rates.

Cab yes, bus no. But it is easier and more economical if you change money into peso. You can do this at any \"casa de cambio\" change window (starting at the airport) or bank. Check posted rates, last year even my small hotel gave a fair rate of exchange.

Or use an ATM card to withdraw peso directly.

I think the bus is 4 or 4.5 peso for a short local ride these days.
