Low Carb in Mexico???

Started April 4, 2005 · 10,104 views · 6 posts
I know, I Know, I will be on vacation, but I can still overindulge but be good at the same time. Any body been to PV who was on a low carb diet? Is diet coke readily available? What about light beers?

Thanks

Re:Low Carb in Mexico???
Just ask for a Coca Light, it is available most places. It may be there, but never heard anybody order a light beer.

My wife has survived the last six trips to Vallarta while doing Atkins.

Diet Coke is easy to find, but diet 7up or sprite are harder to find, especially in bars. You can find small bottles or cans in Walmart etc but no 2 litre bottles, so you pay through the nose. The diet drinks, like the regular drinks taste sweeter in Mexico, as they seem to have a real sweet tooth. Watch out for things that are normally safe in Canada/USA such as peanut butter. They seem to add sugar to everything. Look for sucar on the labels. Some of the best drinks my wife had were at El Chivas in Bucerias. She asked the owner to make her a fruity drink, with berries only and \"no el sucar\". She ended up with 2 glasses of a pink froo froo concoction that tatsted great and had no added sugar. At the end of the 2 drinks (as she was ordering 2 more) she was tanked! I asked what was in them, \"a liitle run, a little vodka, and some strawberries\", ya, right.

Oh yeah, one more thing. Make sure to ask what the drinks are made of. A pina colada made with coconut milk and pineapple juice, or a real margarita, is not actually that bad sugar-wise. But sometimes they are made with jam (any margaritas at the Burros Bar for instance), and that is loaded with sugar. Each bar is different in the preparation.

Great tips. Thakns so much for your imput.

It sounds like Ron con coke dieta is in the cards, and that was a great point about sugar being added to many drinks. Of course there is always the standard shot of tequila.

Salude 6 days to go.

Re:Low Carb in Mexico???
I must tell you I actually lose weight in Mexico without changing my eating habits, and my habits are eating anything and everything along with whatever beverage (alcohol) I can get ahold of. I think the extra activities, ie playing games in the pool, the sun dance, walks on the beach and walking downtown PV gets rid of most of those extra calories. An averge weight loss on a 7 night stay is 3 pounds. I wonder if I could lose those 20 lbs I need to lose if I spent 2 months at a time in PV or am I just dreaming?
