Keep your friends -> don't call COLLECT!
Not exactly a Puerto Vallarta story, but it probably applies:
When traveling to Mexico, I have always used Telmex calling cards to place long distance calls to the U.S. I have always avoided using hotel telephones and I have especially avoided those \"Call the US or Canada Using Your Credit Card\" payphones since I have heard that they can be really expensive.
Well, despite all my caution, I finally got bitten...in a different sort of way. I was home in the U.S. a couple of weeks ago when I received a collect telephone call from a friend. It turned out that he was in Juarez, Mexico, just across the Texas border. Like a fool, I accepted the charges without question and we spoke quickly for about 2 minutes.
To my misfortune, it turns out that he was at a \"Call Collect to Anywhere in U.S. or Canada\" pay telephones and I am now the happy recipient of an absurd $67 charge on my phone bill ---- oooooouch!
