Immunizations

Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on immunizations before going down to PV. I heard Hep A is one we should be getting and updating our diptheria and tetnus. Any input on this?

You should probably get in touch with your local health provider. Tell them where you are going and when. They will be able to let you know what immunizations are needed. If any board members have Kaiser medical coverage (USA), Kaiser has a \"travel clinic\" that advises. 800 phone number and all. After you contact them and tell them your travel plans, they will contact your local clinic and you get your shots there free of charge.

Unless you have serious chronic condition, you will need nothing more than what you need to live in Canada.

If you are in good health, you should have your regular immunizations (tetanos...) up to date and a real good idea is also to be vaccinated against Hepatitis A & B. These are nasty diseases that you can catch anywhere, with higher risks in poorer countries including the Puerto Vallarta area of Mexico. And, unlike the past, these vaccinations are easy and relatively painless. I believe you can get a combined booster for Hep A&B - if you do it 3 times at the right intervals you are protected for life. (In the past the shot for Hep A was ENORMOUS, done in your but (ooowww!) and lasted only 4-6 months.) Better safe than sorry, especially when it is so easy.

Other vaccinations (typhus, typhoid, meningitus, etc.) are probably unnecessary for PV or other big tourist areas like the Riviera Maya, Punta Cana...
