We are thinking of taking an 8 yr old with us to PV. Her birth certificate shows one name but she was legally adopted by her stepfather. Does anyone know what we would need for proper identification for her? She is our grandchild.

Re:ID FOR CHILDREN??
Not sure, but you will probably have to have a copy of the adoption papers showing her name change, along with her birth certificate. You will also have to have written permision from her parents to take her out of the country...Have a great time. !!

You might be able to find useful information, along with a sample travel permission form (to get notarized), here:
http://www.singleparenttravel.net/Writing/Documentation/
The site caters to single-parent travelers, but much of it probably applies in your case.
You might also contact your airline company for advice, as they will be the first people to check your documents before they let you board the plane. Note that an airline company may have its own additional rules about traveling with minors who are not in the presence of their custodians. Another good reason to check with your airline.
