When I was down there in Oct/Nov it was fluctuating between 12.75 and 13.35 sometimes changing in the same day. When I saw it was \"up\" I would exchange a chunk and put it in my room safe.
The easiest way I can explain the higher peso vs. dollar rate now is...when the dollar is strong you get a lesser amount of pesos, when the dollar is weaker the peso is stronger and you get more pesos against the dollar (example) strong dollar = approx. 10 pesos to the dollar...weak dollar = approx. 13 pesos to the dollar.
***As one of the vendors told me when I asked him if he preferred dollars to pesos (now) since there is quite a controversy as to whether or not it is an insult to pay in dollars vs. the Mexican pesos (since pesos are the
currency of Mexico). His response was kind of like the MasterCard ad. \"The stupid people might find it an insult\".....Priceless.... Remember this was a beach vendor who deals with tourists and is in the tourist areas everyday, not a local living way up in some remote village/town where they have no access to a bank or OXXO, Soriano, Ley, Mega or any other business that will give you the going bank rate on exchange.
***This was a survey I decided to do while I was down there for a month my last trip, to ask every local that I had a chance to have a conversation with (vendors, waiters, maids, taxi drivers, store employees,
timeshare sales people) if it was insult if tourists gave them US dollars vs pesos. I told them there was a huge controversy on the internet websites, not one of them I spoke to said it was an insult. I assurred them they would not hurt my feelings I just wanted to know how they \"really\" felt. Do I pay in pesos when I am in PV, yes I do....I am not one of the stupid people, I will take $130 in pesos for $100 US.
