Difficulty cashing canadian at bank?

In the past we found the banks in PV would not cash our canadian travellers cheques until the world market price was established for that day. This sometimes meant having to wait. Is this still the case? And if so, what time should we go to the bank?
Also any other advice on bringing U.S. dollars or Canadian at this time? (We are leaving January 26th.)

Hi , thanks for the reply to my Canadian exchange question. But what are the rates at the ATM? On any day will they give you the same rate as the bank teller? And what about the charge for using the machine?

Not quite sure I understand why he feels an ATM card is in any greater jeopardy in PV than at home or anywhere else.

There is no need to convert Cdn $ to US $ or travellers cheques . The money exchanges will take Cdn $ no problem - they are everywhere. That said we do bring a stack of US 1 $ bills for tipping ( I know pesos are preferable) We do this because smaller Mexican currency is very scarce.

Good tip from a client! ALWAYS travel with a credit card, or at least an ATM. He had an accident and needed to go to the hospital.... no credit card, no ATM card and only enough travelers checks to cover 25% of the bill. He needed to have money wired by Western Union with a $50 US wire transfer fee.

In essense, your credit card is as safe here as anywhere, especially if you have an in room safe. If in doubt, bring it, and hope you may not need it!

This tip about a credit card is a good one. When we were there last, my wife got a bad sunburn on the tops of her feet and had to be seen by a doctor. She had to receive a cortizone shot and get some cream for her feet. This all cost $100 US. I had to either pay by travellers cheques, or by credit card. I used my credit card and saved a lot of hassle, and I got the exchange rate of the day. When I returned home to Canada, I simply called the card company and told them that I was home, and that there should be no more transactions from Mexico. I did this simply for my own peace of mind. You may also want to call them before you leave and let them know you may be using your card out of country, so that they let the charges go through and do not think that it is a fraudulent transaction.
