Passports for children (actually, everyone) are not required until January of 2007. You will need their birth certificates in order to prove their citizenship, as well as to prove you are their parents. Passports are nice to have tho, because the process seems to go more smoothly/quickly. If you intend to travel internationally with your children, you are going to be required to have a passport as of 1/07, so why not get them now?
Have a good trip! :)
