Portraits of My Neighbors - Painting Jose

José is an artist and his art form is sculpture in sand. His studio is the playa (the beach) and his gallery, the Malecon. It was a relaxing studio for me to paint in even though there were a lot of people passing by. I had gone there one day to set up the sitting, talking to one of the workers, making the date.
When I returned at the designated time, Monday at noon, José was there and I learned that he was the sculptor and he was the one to be painted. He took a pose in front of his large sand sculpture and it was refreshing there, with the sounds of the ocean right beside me, the wind in my hair, sand on the canvas, smiling workers all around.
I liked his way. I usually work alone in my studio; here we were surrounded by people. I came to enjoy working on the beach and felt I was in danger of relaxing too much, abandoning everything I had worked hard to establish, simply to work right there at the edge of the sea. That was at the beginning of the painting. Once the two hours were up after the first sitting, I was happy to get out of the intense sun and back to the cool solitude of my studio - and I recognized the hard work he doing there.
He is from Venezuela and he travels the world over, entering competitions and winning them too; he won $ 4,000 in one competition. He and his workers make their income from tips people leave as they come to admire and photograph his work. I marveled at the labor and the detail in his work as well as the inventiveness.
I painted José in front of a woman sculpted in sand; there is also a serpent with serpent skin carefully built. Not is the painting is a man to protect the woman. At Easter he does the Pieta. They are very detailed and there is an expansive quality to his work. He hopes to go to Italy in the summer to work in marble and he is content to use the abundance of material here on the beach to make his art.
I was content to hear him say that I painted him the way he sees himself.
