Did anyone else read ( I did this Sunday) about the new passports? The Portland, Or paper had an aritcle stating new passports would come with an embedded disc that would contain all personal data. they referred to them as an \"e passport\" but would still be in hard copy??? Any one apply recently?

I recall reading something about them a couple of months ago. I got the impression they have not started issuing the ones with the chip in them yet. I applied for mine about 3 weeks ago but I am not scheduled to get it until the week I leave for PV. I am sure it will come the day after I leave. You could probably find out by calling a post office near you that issues them.
The article i read stated that the would begin issuing the new ones in like 6 months.

The embedded info would allow them to scan the passports - presumebly from some distance - which would allow them to be used like a tracking device at least locally in a building or somehthing. Though i guess if they decide as well to enbed a tiny battery they could produce a signal and truley become tracking devices (this was not part of the existing plan)

As well there were also concerns that much more than general info could be stored in the chip and who knows who could hack into it.

Anyway there was like 6 months left to get a oldstyle passport then all new ones would have the chip.

Govt seems to be very big brotherish all the time. I have a friend who just got mex citizenship down in colima. At the \"graduation\" reps from the USA counsulate of guadalajara stood and took pictures of all the USA citizens. Obviously they have nothing better to do.
Just re-applied for a new one. As far as I know it should be the old style.
Just received mine in the mail yesterday and it is the old style!

It took exactly 30 days from the day I applied to until the day I received it.
my us passport expires 2009
still valid until then??

Yep...new and re-issues in 6 months will be new style.
