Festivities Planned for Independence Day

Puerto Vallarta’s City Hall is preparing a big fiesta in celebration of the 196th anniversary of Mexico’s Independence. It is organizing an ample program of civic and cultural activities to begin early in the morning of the 16th of September, and end late in the evening. The events will be held in various locations in town, and include the usual games and races along the Malecon, complete with cash prizes for the winners.
On the other hand, councilwoman Isabel Cortes Moreno, President of the Comisión de Hacienda, expressed her dismay at the attitude of Mayor Gustavo Gonzalez Villaseñor and four other delegates with regard to the urgent need for $70,000 pesos for the festivities. Guadalupe Francisco Franco Machain said that the funds were included in the City’s budget for 2006, but that they would not suffice for the purpose. Sr. Franco Machain pointed out that last year’s Fiestas Patrias cost $130,000, and now “the City Council is only giving us half.”
