“The
quality of tequila depends on the different way it is
produced,”
“Our way is the natural way” says Antonio.
“We make it the way it was a long time ago”.
100% Pure Blue Agave Tequila is just that, 100% pure.
No added sugars and no chemicals. So with a little research
I found out that there are over 500 mass produced brands
sold in the United States provided by about 75 distillers
around the globe.
Antonio, along with his wife Lucy and his sister Marlene
keep the Leyva Family distillery in motion. His entire
family which includes nine brothers and sisters work
to produce what many local people in the area consider
one of the fitness Tequilas around.
The Leyva Family owns 4 distilleries and over 250 acres
of Blue Agave Plants which are used to prepare the Tequila.
The Blue Agave Plants are carefully grown and harvested
in a schedule rotation due to the fact that it takes
10 full years for the plant to become mature enough
to use. To make tequila, the Agave plant, which locks
similar to a yucca or hundred-year plant, first has
all its leaves chopped off. Then the central core, called
a piña, is cooked and then fermented.
Antonio says his family does not need new technology
to make or to know to make good tequila. He has no desire
to mass produce his product. “Here we have the
plants to make tequila, here we work hard to produce
tequila and here we sell our tequila at the same place
where we produce it”, states Antonio proudly.
It doesn’t get more home based than that considering
the distillery in located in front of the families residential
propriety. Not surprising, tourists (like me who visited
Puerto Vallarta last month) do not provide the bulk
of Antonio’s business. Local people come on the
weekends to enjoy a bottle of tequila and the Leyva
Family hospitality.
